What most people get wrong: They rely on memory alone
Most of us only remember personal details when we have a lot of repeated exposure â but work moves fast, and we meet a lot of people. The fix isnât âtry harder.â Itâs building a light system.
A better approach: make it easy to notice + capture + reuse
Notice one âanchorâ detail
Listen for something you can naturally tie to a category:
⢠Family / pets
⢠Hometown / travel
⢠Weekend plans / hobbies
⢠Current project / stressor
⢠Favorite things (coffee order, team, book, show)
Repeat it once (to lock it in)
Quickly mirror it back in the moment:
âOh nice â you said youâre going to Seattle this weekend?â
Capture it in one line
Right after the conversation, jot a tiny note wherever youâll actually look again (contacts note, CRM, notes app):
âTori â hiking + golden retriever, sister in Chicago, new to NYC.â
Use a ânext timeâ prompt
Add a simple reminder you can follow up on:
âAsk about: trip to Seattle / marathon training / new role.â
Bring it back naturally
Next convo, reference one detail and keep it short:
âHow did the Seattle trip go?â
People donât need a biography â one remembered thing is plenty.
Donât overdo it
Aim for warmth, not surveillance. If itâs sensitive or personal, donât store it â just remember the vibe and follow their lead.
